If you are going to choose a smartphone then you need to select either Sony Xperia Z2 or Samsung Galaxy S5 as your next-Gen handset. The reason behind is that these two handsets are considered as the best smartphones ever made. However, both devices come loaded with similar specs but still there are something noticeable improvements as compare to each other.
In this post, we’ll discuss and compare various specs and features of both devices so that you can make your decision easily, if you are interested in buying the Galaxy S5 or Xperia Z2 on contract deals.
Design & Build
Needless to say, while choosing a smartphone, you certainly focus on the exterior appearance of the handset. Hence, let’s have a look at the overall build quality and design of both smartphones i.e. Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2.
The first similarity that we’ve found in both handsets is their waterproofing and dust resistance ability. The Z2 has been provided IP55 protection while the S5 has been provided IP67 protection rating. The main point that distinguishes the Galaxy S5 from its opponent is that it has a removable rear panel. The new S5 is simply a solid looking device with an eye catching appearance.
On the other hand, the Xperia Z2 has been engineered using metal and glass. In some extent, the Z2 leads its opponent in terms of appearance. The seamless design of the device makes it an elegant smartphone as compare to the Galaxy S5.
After analyzing design, appearance and build quality of both devices, we have concluded that the Z2 has better appearance and build quality than its rival. In other words, we can say that the Z2, in some extent, leads the Apple’s iPhone 5s in terms of an elegant look.
When it comes to screen quality, we couldn’t find a noticeable difference between both handsets. The S5 houses a 5.1-inch super AMOLED (1080p) display that offers a pixel density of 432ppi. On the other hand, the Z2 comes incorporated with a relatively bigger 5.2-inch LCD (1080p) display offering lesser pixel density as compare to its rival i.e. 424ppi. Moreover, Sony has also provided Live Colour LED technology to this new flagship phone to improve the colour sharpness on the screen.
We tested screen clarity of both devices and found no big difference in both devices. Both handsets are offering brilliant viewing experience with brighter, clearer and more vivid colours.
The Galaxy S5 comes loaded with a 16-megapixel rear camera which is capable of capturing videos at 4K resolution. On the other hand, the Xperia Z2 houses a 20.7-megapixel rear camera. Hence, if you go with pixel counts, you will surely choose Xperia Z2.
While testing the camera of the S5, we’ve noticed that the images captured by it are of great quality. Here, we would like to mention that the camera of the S5 works fantastic, especially on HDR mode. It can also be used under low-light condition. But, if you try to capture brighter, clearer and true to nature colour images in dark condition, you will be disappointed with it.
However, the Xperia Z2 comprises a relatively high pixel camera but it doesn’t mean that it is better than its opponent. We tested the camera in low-light condition and found average results. It means that whether you choose S5 or Z2, you aren’t supposed to capture high-quality images in low-light condition, while both devices produce excellent results under better lightning condition.
The main advantage that we’ve found in both cameras is their 4K video recording capability.
However, both handsets are powered with a Quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, even though there are some minor differences. The Galaxy S5 is clocked at 2.5GHz while the Z2 is clocked at 2.3GHz, which is certainly a bit lower than its opponent. Another area wherein the Z2 simply leads its opponent is the amount of RAM. The Xperia Z2 has equipped with a 3GB of RAM while the S5 contains only 2GB of RAM.
However, at first glance, you won’t notice any big difference in both devices, but using a device having increased RAM could provide better multitasking experience. In our performance test, we have found both devices performing great with no technical error.
Now, have a look at the storage capacity of both handsets. The Galaxy S5 comes in two different variants to choose from i.e. 16GB as well as 32GB. On the other hand, the Z2 comes with a 16GB onboard memory. Both smartphones contain a micro SD card slot to expand storage capacity up to 128GB.
In short, we can say that both handsets are offering same performance, but the Galaxy S5 gives you more choices.
It’s a known fact that both handsets are equipped with a powerful processor, and thus consume lots of energy. So, a solid battery is needed for both devices. The Galaxy S5 comes with a removable battery of 2800mAh with powerful backup time but not as good as the Xperia Z2 has.
The Xperia Z2 houses a non-removable 3200mAh battery, which is more powerful than the S5. The Z2 is leading as compare to its opponent in terms of offering a solid and long lasting battery life. In our test of mix usages of watching movies, playing games, calling and surfing on the internet, we found it working great for a full day.
Remember, both handsets are powered with Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system. Samsung has provided its TouchWiz UI on the top of its flagship phone called the S5. It means that you will get more benefits out of this tweak.
On the other hand, Xperia Z2 is considered as a pure Android device just like Google’s Nexus handsets. Sony hasn’t provided extra tweaks to its flagship phone called the Xperia Z2.
While observing both handsets, we’ve found them functioning smoothly with no technical hurdle.
When it comes to extra features, we have found the Z2 comes loaded with some traditional features. There is no noticeable extra feature found on Sony’s flagship phone. If we have to find out some extra features then we can only mention its front-facing stereo speakers. It means that you don’t need to use headphones while listening to your favourite music.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S5 comes loaded with lots of additional features. For instance, a heart rate monitor, fingerprint sensor and gesture and eye tracking technology. If you are looking for a device equipped with health related apps then you must go with the S5. The fingerprint sensor of the device allows you to use it for your PayPal account as a security password. However, in our test, we have noticed that using fingerprint sensor on the S5 is not better than the iPhone 5s.
Having gone through various specs, functionalities and additional features of both devices, we have concluded that both devices come incorporated with some mind-boggling features.
